PLANTS beautiful gardens
Janine Mendel of Cultivart has created a lush, inviting feel to this garden with layered
plantings. The site was long and narrow with lots of small areas to contend with so Janine
made use of compact trees and understorey planting to give depth and interest to the
space. Magnolia ‘Little Gem’ (at back) added strong form to the boundary planting.
These were underplanted with variegated Dianella, chosen for its light-coloured,
contrasting foliage. The foreground planting is made up of Cycas revoluta, a hardy
attractive clumping plant with dramatic foliage. Behind this Draceana marginata adds
height and interest with its multiple trunks and sculptural leaves. Janine chose an
ornamental pear tree to give some seasonal colour to the garden and the white spring
blossoms are reflected in the small white flowering Bacopa placed centre stage in a
conical black pot. Cultivart 0414 865 747, www.cultivart.com.au .
