the original garden
It was a "blink and you'll miss it" garden that
lacked style and looked dated. According to Janine
Mendel from CultivArt, the garden was "tired",
consisting largely of couch grass, kerbing and an
old boundary fence.
e planting was lacklustre with strips of lawn
and a small outdoor entertaining space.
the client brief
Part of the lawn had to remain, due to the clients'
beautiful "carer" dog, Monti. e importance of
Monti became so significant to the overall design
that Janine chose to name it Monti's Garden when
she submitted it at the recent Landscape Design
Awards (Monti obviously won hearts as the garden
won its category too).
Janine was to create a contemporary garden with
"wow" factor, without overwhelming the existing
home, which was circa late-1990s.
e garden was to be low maintenance with a
focal point, which wasn't a water feature.
e clients requested the pergola to be pitched
and covered to provide weather protection for their
e access to the site was quite restrictive with all
materials needing to be wheelbarrowed in through
the garage doorway.
Janine was hoping to install a "super advanced
tree", however the cost of craning the tree over the
house due to lack of access was too prohibitive for
e over-height boundary wall presented some
challenges with neighbours and council, but these
were overcome with minor difficulty.
creating the look
CultivArt removed the pergola's central support
and replaced it before modifying the covering
structure, which created a larger entertaining area
CultivArt designed the stainless steel bowl and
had it made at Lump Studios in Melbourne.
